CHAMBER MUSIC GROUPS Gropius Quartet.
The Gropius Quartet is more than the sum of its parts: Friedemann Eichhorn, Indira Koch, Alexia Eichhorn and Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt are all established soloists and chamber musicians. In their conceptually thought-out and intuitively recorded interpretations, this constellation contributes to the electrifying dynamics of the two musical couples.
Walter Gropius is considered a revolutionary visionary who founded the Bauhaus style in the 1920s. Clarity and boldness characterize his work. As with the musicians of the Gropius Quartet, Weimar and Berlin form his creative center. Following the example of Gropius - and shaped by personal encounters with Yehudi Menuhin and Mstislav Rostropovich - the Gropius Quartet aims to work out the clear structure of the composition and make it tangible with passionate play. The members of the Gropius Quartet have known each other since their studies at the International Menuhin Music Academy Gstaad and the Juilliard School New York.
Since the founding concert at the Nationaltheater Weimar in 2018, the Gropius Quartet has presented itself with exciting programs in which, in addition to the classical repertoire, work discoveries and frequent world premieres can be heard. The Gropius Quartet connects close cooperation with composers such as George Alexander Albrecht, Enjott Schneider, Burkhard Egdorf and Sir Karl Jenkins, who wrote for the Gropius Quartet.
In 2019, the Gropius Quartet resided in New York. Inspired by this study stay, the Gropius Quartet brought a rousing program with works by Erich Korngold, John Adams and Antonin Dvorák.
Since its foundation, the Gropius Quartet has performed in Germany, Switzerland, Denmark and Portugal, together with Mischa Maisky, Lily Maisky, Matthias Kirschnereit and Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro, among others.
In 2021, the Gropius Quartet designed its first own festival in Bonn/ Bad Honnef. The next edition of the festival "Gropius plus" will take place in autumn 2022.
Other highlights of the 2022 concert calendar are debuts at the Konzerthaus Berlin and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, as well as concert tours to the USA and Canada.
A large portrait of the Gropius Quartet in its series "Die besondere Aufnahme" was broadcast by Deutschlandradio Kultur 2021.
